Welcome Back!

Welcome back “Long Winter Survivors”!

I hope everyone had a chance to relax and enjoy the somewhat sunny days we had during the March break. I would like to provide an update on the concepts we will be learning in March.

1. In Language, we are continuing letter writing. My hope is that students are able to use the letters for student activism to force change around the school, the community and the world.

 

2. In Mathematics, we are wrapping up with fractions and equality between pairs of expressions. We will continue delving into the Number Sense & Numeration strand next week, wherein we will solve math problems using multiplication and division strategies.

3. In Science, we are starting our next unit on Air and Water in the Environment.

Since Clairlea is a gold level Eco-School, our students and staff are dedicated to reducing energy consumption, as well as creating awareness of the environment surrounding us. We will participate in a school-wide Eco Project revolving around the use and effects of salt on the environment.

4. In Health, we will discuss the parts of the human body and elaborate on the 5 senses which tie in very well with our Science unit.

5. In Social Studies, each student will receive the written assignment, the rubric and a paper bag to place any interesting items they would like to share with the class on the country of choice. This project will be done mostly at home, although students are free to use library time to sign out books on their country, or search the Internet during our computer period.

Please ensure that your child writes his/her own descriptions, even though you may help explain them. This will be a collaborative project between you and your child but the final poster should be done exclusively by your child.

3.      Paper bag (items included)

I will provide exemplars of a level 3 (B) project in class.  There is plenty of time to ask for questions and I am happy to help along the way! The project is due on Monday, March 31^st, 2014.

Bienvenue à l’ecrivain Mireille Messier

Dear parents/guardian,
On Wednesday, March 5th, the primary FI students will meet the well-known French author, Mireille Messier. In Language, we will begin student activism through letter writing to force change. Hence, the presentation from the author will hopefully spark an interest in students to write with passion and to express themselves in a unique manner. Students are asked to bring attentive ears and any questions they may have for the author.

African Heritage Concert -Feb. 27

Dear parents/guardian,
Please join us today -Thursday, February 27th at 7:00pm along with your child for an outstanding evening!
Reminders:
1. Please arrive with your child at 6:30 pm to allow for time to get dressed into costumes and to prepare in Room A107 at Winston Churchill CI.
2. Please wear black pants/tights and a bright top. 
3. Please bring a book or a silent game. 
4. Students can be picked up from Room A107 AFTER the concert has finished.

Amazing day with Scientist Murphy!

The students in Room 112 had a blast with Scientist Murphy today. They enjoyed working collaboratively in groups to further their understanding of structures, mechanisms and the 6 simple machines. The workshop provided a hands-on experience to compliment what we discussed in class. Following the workshop, students indicated an interest in becoming a scientist or an engineer as a result of their participation. I believe the workshop did awaken a passion for science and technology in particular students.

Scientists in School

On Wednesday, February 19th, the students in Room 112 will take part in the MOVE IT workshop. Students will need to bring their creativity, curiosity and teamwork skills in order to take part in an exciting afternoon. If you would like to help volunteer during this innovative hands-on classroom workshop, please indicate your availability in your child's agenda.

African Heritage Concert

Dear parents/guardian,
Students at Clairlea P.S. have been diligently practising for a school-wide African Heritage concert taking place on Thursday, February 27th at 7:00pm at Winston Churchill CI. The students in Grade's 1 to 8 have demonstrated amazing teamwork and great talents in the dance and music programs.

Your child was given a letter to take home regarding interviews that will take place on Thursday, February 13th and Friday, February 14th. Please return the completed form by Friday, February 7th, in order to allow for time to organize the interviews and to get back to you.
