Fabulous Day at the Toronto Zoo

On Friday, June 14th, 2019 the Grade 1 classes had a wonderful day at the Toronto Zoo. We explored the wildlife and caught a glimpse of several animals including tigers, giraffes, camels, snow leopards, polar bears, rhinos, gorilla's, turtle's and much more!

Thank you to all the parent volunteers for attending. It was a successful day and a fantastic end of the year memory with all the Grade 1 students.

Trip to the ZOO - Friday, June 14

On Friday, June 14thour class will be going to the Toronto Zoo (rain or shine). We will be leaving the school at 9:00 a.m. Please ensure your child arrives at school on time so we can get ready to go as soon as possible! Pick-up time will be 3:15 p.m., as usual.

Packing and Dressing

1.  A packed litterless, nut-free lunch and a snack is required. Please ensure that your child eats a good breakfast and goes to the washroom before arriving to school. 
2. Ensure your child has a small bag/lunch bag appropriate for carrying his/her belongings for the day. Please be aware that each student is responsible for carrying his/her own belongings.
3. Dress appropriately for the weather (i.e., sun hat, rain jacket). Wear protective sun gear (e.g., sunblock).

Thank you to the parents (who I have already contacted), who will be volunteering on the trip. You may arrive at school the same time as your child.

I can't believe it's already June and my wonderful Grade 1 students will soon head off to Grade 2! June will be a busy and fun-filled month for your child. Thank you for your continued support with your child's learning.

Histoires d'abeilles- Story of the Bees

Bees are amazzzing!
They have much to teach us, they fascinate us, they are beautiful, and their importance to humans is beyond words. Honey bees are associated with the production of 1/3 of the worlds' food for humans (through pollination, but also honey), healing, and perhaps more than any other creature- if not the only creature, held up as setting a selfless example to humans on successful communities.

So, as the culminating activity to our narrative writing unit, students wrote a story of a honey bee. Students were inspired by the bee movie and got writing!
Success Criteria
1. Story has a beginning, middle, and end.
2. Story has at least one character and setting explained in detail.
3. Story has a problem and a solution.
4. Writing conventions are respected (e.g., capitals, periods, spacing, spelling).

The students are enthusiastic and eager to present their stories to parents/guardians.

Les moulins a vent - Windmills

In Science, our focus is learning about energy which is power used to provide light, sound, heat or to work machines. We learned about sources of energy such as sunlight (soleil), wind (éolienne), electrical (éléctrique), fire (chaleur), sound (son) and physical (personnel). 

We built our very own windmills (les moulins a vent) and performed experiments outside.
