End of the Year "Hopes and Dreams" Speech

Students in Room 112 decided to write a small speech about what they would do if they were able to control all of the world's resources. Throughout their presentations, I have noticed just how empathetic, generous, and selfless my Grade 2 students are. They didn't think to buy anything for themselves, but rather to use the resources to help others by finding the cure to cancer, building schools in underprivileged countries, enforcing a Snack Program in all schools, picking up garbage, creating easily accessible devises for the disabled/handicapped, finding ways to resolve conflicts without war, finding families for orphans, etc. I am so proud of you all!

Great day at the Science Center!

The students and I had a blast taking part in a workshop, watching an Imax film, and touring new exhibits at the Science Center.

Today our class enjoyed designing and writing pop-up cards to the important male figures in our lives (i.e., grand father, uncle, father, brother, cousin, etc). So, to all the wonderful men whom we spoke about today, enjoy the pop-up card that your child made especially for you!

P.S. A reminder, that Monday, June 16th, 2014 is the Ontario Science Center Trip. Please arrive on time and prepared.

Mark Your Calendar - June

You wouldn't want to miss all the FUN happening at Clairlea in June. So, please save the following dates onto your calendar.

1. Friday, June 6th is a P.A. day. There is no school for students on this day.

2. Thursday, June 12th is the start of the FIFA World Cup! As mentioned in my previous blog, our class will be doing activities pertaining to the soccer games. Once the World Cup begins, please send with your child any magazines/newspapers about the games, teams and/or players. 

3. Monday, June 16th is our Ontario Science Trip. 

4. Wednesday, June 18th is Pizza Lunch. Even if you pre-ordered for the year, you still need to order and pay for June because the pre-orders were just until May. The orders are due by Fri. June 13th. 

5. Thursday, June 19th is the FUN FAIR. The Fun Fair will take place in and outside the school from 5:30 pm to 8: 00 pm. Everyone is welcome, even if you don't attend the school, you are welcome. Make sure to place your bids for the Staff Auction before Mon. June 9th. In addition, please help the Parent Council with any donations to help make the Fair a huge success. Details are in the flyers sent home with your child.

6. Friday, June 20th is the Panther Assembly and Clairlea's Rock Star Day!

7. Friday, June 27th is the End of Year Panther Assembly.

Coupe du monde de la FIFA

The FIFA World Cup will run from June 12th to July 13th 2014. This is an exciting time as it will give the class a chance to learn about the host country, Brazil in Social Studies and to delve into many core values shared in playing soccer such as teamwork, perseverance, cooperation and fair play. 

Brazil is the lucky country to play host this time around! We will be doing arts and craft activities in class. Once the FIFA Cup games begin, I kindly ask that you bring to school any magazines, newspapers or information regarding the teams, players, and/or countries involved.

French Language Points

Dear parents/guardians,

The past month, I have found myself constantly encouraging students to speak only in French. I kindly remind parents and students alike that practice makes perfect and the more French students speak in class, the more they will learn and remember. 

It can be difficult to enforce French only, especially with a large class and when students are completing group work. Some groups finish French exercises faster than others, and then English conversation usually follows. I would like to make it clear that it is not chatter in class that is frowned upon but rather the English chatter in class. As long as students are using French, they can chat as much as they like (with reason of course).

New French Language Points System

So, I have decided to reintroduce the French Language points system. Students will continue to accumulate points for speaking in French. Once a student has accumulated five points, the student will receive a surprise. Since there are five very competitive groups in class (each with names and logos), I would like to add a bonus surprise at the end of each month for the group that has accumulated the most French Language points!

In addition, the homework for this week is to watch the episode of “Le Petit Nicolas- Maixent le Magicien” and answer the following reading comprehension questions in the homework cahier:

Healthy Schools 5km Run/Walk is Tomorrow!

Dear parents/guardian,
Tomorrow, May 24th, the TDSB will be hosting a Healthy Schools 5km Run/Walk at Downsview Park. Students who submitted their permission forms are requested to be at school at 8:15 a.m. sharp, as the bus leaves at 8:30 a.m.

How to prepare?
1. Eat a healthy and balanced breakfast.
2. Bring a water bottle.
3. Dress comfortably for the run (i.e. running shoes, running attire).
* Please dress in Clairlea spirit wear.
