As-tu rempli un seau aujourd'hui?/ Have you filled a bucket today?

Since tomorrow is Beach Day and the Panther Assembly at Clairlea, the students and I have been discussing the qualities of an honest person and what types of activities they enjoy at the beach. One of the most popular activities is playing in the sand and building sand castles using a pail and a shovel.

Along these lines, we decided to read "As-tu rempli un seau aujourd'hui?" by Carol McCloud. This is a book about feelings and making the right choices. The book uses an invisible bucket, that everyone has, to help illustrate how to fill your bucket. The idea is to encourage positive behaviour as students see how rewarding it is to show daily kindness, appreciation, and love. The bucket is used as a metaphor to understand the effects of our actions and words on others and ourselves.

Engage in your child's learning by asking him/her about the book and ways they could fill their bucket at home, at school, and in the community. We can start by taking part in Earth Hour tomorrow!

P.S. Don't forget to bring a change of clothes for Beach Day tomorrow.

Bon congé de mars!

Happy March break! I wish you all a safe and restful break.
As you and your child make plans to do interesting things together, please try to dedicate some time to practice the following material before returning to school on March 23rd.

1. Practice counting by 1's, 2's, 5's, and 10's in French. Practice counting starting from different numbers.
Visit this website for activities involving numbers: http://lexiquefle.free.fr/numero.swf

2. Students created their own syllable/consonant chart to use at home. Practice sounding out different clusters of letters and forming a list of words.

Visit these websites for exercises on printing the letters of the alphabet and pronunciation: http://lexiquefle.free.fr/allpha.swf

'A Year in My Life' Science Project

The students have been hard at work in completing a Science project about the four seasons. Students worked in cooperative groups. Each student was assigned one of the following tasks:
- naming outdoor activities for that season
- researching how long the days are in each season
- describing what clothes you could wear in the season
- draw an apple tree as it would look throughout the season
- describe how trees change during the year e.g., shedding leaves in autumn
- monitor the temperature and draw the thermometer to show the temperature in each month of that season

The work posted outside our classroom is a reflection of a year in a Grade 1 students' life.

All that is left are the presentations. Bonne continuation!

A Week to Remember!

Our trip today at Ripley's Aquarium was the icing on the cake to this busy, fast-paced, and exciting week! To top it all off, one of my students bought me a mug from Ripley's Aquarium to tell me just how much they appreciated this trip. Merci!

Many thanks to the wonderful mothers who attended the trip; Vivian, Efthalia, Pinky, and Savita.

Montre et raconte

Dear parents/guardians,

We have been discussing and learning about cultures, languages, flag descriptions, etc. of African countries. The students and I decided the theme for this months show and tell ("Montre et raconte") is students' own culture, history, and background. Take a look!
