How is our class marble jar doing?

The students were introduced to the marble jar system a while back. The students were doing well speaking French in and outside the classroom, until it came to April!! The results speak for themselves.

So, we co-created a poster to remind us of common phrases used in and outside the classroom (and their correct forms). We are working together towards a 'refreshing' reward this month. This is not to say that we need a reward to speak French. We do it because we are slowly becoming independent learners who appreciate the language.

Please reinforce the marble system with your child at home and feel free to check the Language and Parent Resource tabs on the right hand side of the blog to practice French vocabulary, phrases, etc.

P.S. I am very proud of the following students who always speak French, even during recess (yes I overheard them during yard duty):

Sarwa
Jaya

Three Panther Roars for them!!!

Shared Reading & Dictation

This week we are reading a story about a hippopotamus entitled "Pipo l'hippopotame". We are searching for words that contain consonant clusters with the letter /p/. As always, the dictation words are derived from our weekly shared reading booklets.
Sound booklets and levelled books (sac a livre) were sent home yesterday. Happy reading!

Dictation for Friday, April 29th.

Earth Day- April 22nd

Our class and Mme Jankes' class have decided to take on a variety of eco-initiatives this week, in preparation for Earth Day which is Friday, April 22nd.

Earth Day is an annual worldwide event held to show support for environmental protection.
Our classes will be making posters with eco-friendly advice, cleaning up the school yard, planting, etc.

Our dictation this Friday will be vocabulary used in Spring (specifically, when planting).

Scientist Josée

On April 14th, the students in Room 111 were excited to meet scientist Josée who introduced us to 5 hands-on energy activities. Josée has inspired us to explore and investigate STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) through practical resources and science experiments that can also be conducted at home!
Many thanks to the fabulous parent volunteers: Mr. Matheson, Mrs. Ticku, and Mrs. Lavallee.

For more science activities, visit: scientistsinschool.ca/for-teachers-and-parents.php

CHALLENGE
Become a chemist and invent a never-before tasted flavour of ice cream! The Kidz Lab STEM Challenge is open to Kindergarten - Grade 8 students.

PRIZES
A Scientists in School workshop and lunch for the winner’s class, and a gift basket for the winner.

Energy Conservation Center: Students identified how to build and maintain an eco friendly home (e.g., insulation, turning off taps/lights, adding a solar panel, etc.).

Heat Energy Center: Students investigated how different coloured fabrics affect the absorption of heat energy and the temperature of an object. We also conducted an experiment using soap and our body heat from friction.

Light Energy Center: Students discovered the importance of the sun's energy in the growth of our food and tested the power of the sun's rays using sun glasses, sun screen, and a black shirt.

Solar Energy Center: Students discovered how the sun affects the movement of air over land and water to create wind and constructed pinwheels.

Solar Panel Center: Students used a solar panel to spin a wheel, play music, and create a piece of artwork.

Robot City

The students in Room 111 created and designed their own Energy Robot. With the fast-paced technology driven world we live in, the students and I discussed how they are the future generation which will most likely encounter machines/robots. The aim was to build a robot that would help solve some of the problems of our planet.

They began by writing about the shapes used to design the robot and three types of energy the robot uses to be efficient (e.g., solar energy to heat homes, electrical energy to move, etc.).
Cognizant of the fact that many students are kinaesthetic learners, they enjoyed the second part of the culminating activity, which was building the robot. We tried to uphold our school Eco Platinum status by using recycled material.

Félicitations les amis!

La dictée- le 14 avril

This week, we are looking at words that contain the consonant /t/. We are reading a story about a little monkey entitled "Titi le petit ouistiti" to help with the words for this week's dictation.

*Since Friday is a P.A. Day, the dictation will be on Thursday, April 14th.
